Two Brazilians shared their shock on social media when they found a giant crab spider (Heteropoda venatoria) in the bathroom of their apartment in Australia’s Gold Coast.

27-year-old couple Victoria and Gabriele Maglioni told the G1 portal that they consider their encounter with the spider as their “baptism” with “scary” animals in the country.
“We prepare a lot for everything, not just for seeing kangaroos,” he joked. “We were scared because she was so big. I was really scared. If it wasn’t Gabriel, I don’t know what I would have done, because I wouldn’t have had the courage to hit her, let alone catch her.”
Both lived in Praia Grande, on the coast of São Paulo, and moved to the Oceanian country in 2023. Even after the warnings and several researches on the local fauna, the fear after the encounter with the arachnid was enormous.
According to the couple, the crab spider was more than 15 centimetres in length. Gabriel used a jar to catch it and then opened the container in the backyard of the building. “There was no point in killing it,” he said.
