Emirates is bringing a feature more commonly associated with the pointy end of the aircraft to premium economy, unveiling electrically adjustable privacy screens for passengers travelling aboard its incoming Airbus A350 fleet.
The Dubai-based carrier says the full-height dividers will offer travellers greater personal space and privacy during long-haul flights, addressing one of the more awkward aspects of sharing an aircraft cabin with strangers.
Privacy Screens Coming to Emirates Premium Economy
The new privacy screens will be installed between individual premium economy seats. Passengers will be able to raise or lower the divider electrically, creating a more secluded space at the touch of a button.
Such privacy features have traditionally been reserved for business and first class cabins, where doors, partitions and high seat shells have increasingly become standard features on premium long-haul products.
Emirates claims its new design represents a world-first for premium economy cabins.
For Australian travellers accustomed to lengthy international journeys to Europe, the Middle East and beyond, additional privacy could prove particularly appealing. Flights between Australia and Emirates’ Dubai hub typically involve many hours in the air, making comfort and personal space important considerations.
First Fully Electric Premium Economy Seat for Emirates
The privacy screen is not the only major change. Emirates says the new product will also become its first premium economy seat with fully electric adjustment.
Rather than manually repositioning their seat, passengers will be able to select their preferred configuration through an integrated Passenger Control Unit.
“Customers can also adjust their preferred seating position at the touch of a button using the integrated Passenger Control Unit, with dedicated settings like lounge mode and meal mode,” Emirates said in a statement.
The system is designed to make switching between dining, relaxing and other seating positions simpler during a flight.
New Headrests and Footrests Add Extra Comfort
Emirates is also introducing U-Dream headrests to the premium economy cabin. These include adjustable leather “wings” intended to provide additional support for passengers’ heads and necks.
A footrest is included as part of the seat design, further differentiating the cabin from standard economy.
Together, the electrically adjustable seat, privacy divider, headrest and footrest represent a significant upgrade to Emirates’ premium economy offering.
Airbus A350 to Feature 28 Premium Economy Seats
The Airbus A350 aircraft equipped with the new product will feature 28 premium economy seats arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration.
That layout places seven seats across each row, compared with the denser configurations generally found in economy cabins.
Premium economy has become an increasingly important part of the international aviation market, positioned between traditional economy and substantially more expensive business-class products. Airlines have increasingly invested in the cabin as travellers seek additional comfort without paying business-class fares.
Emirates’ decision to introduce privacy dividers signals another step in that evolution, bringing a feature previously associated with higher cabin classes into the premium economy segment.
Greater Personal Space on Long-Haul Flights
Privacy can be difficult to find on a commercial aircraft, particularly when passengers are seated beside people they do not know. From sharing armrests to watching entertainment on nearby screens, close proximity is an unavoidable part of most economy and premium economy journeys.
The adjustable divider will not create the enclosed suite experience available in some business-class cabins, but it should provide passengers with a greater sense of separation from their neighbours.
Importantly, travellers can choose whether to use the screen, allowing the cabin to remain more open when passengers are travelling together.
Premium Economy Competition Continues to Grow
The new seats highlight how airlines are increasingly competing on comfort and privacy beyond business class.
For Emirates, the Airbus A350 provides an opportunity to introduce updated cabin technology while strengthening its premium economy proposition. The carrier’s latest design combines electrically controlled seating, additional head and neck support and adjustable privacy screens in a cabin aimed at passengers seeking a middle ground between economy and business class.
While fully private suites remain firmly in premium territory, Emirates’ latest A350 configuration suggests that some of those features are gradually moving further down the aircraft cabin.
