Barkhuizen Preston helps North End secure return to Huddersfield Towers

Barkhuizen Preston helps North End secure return to Huddersfield Towers

Shown as a South African midfielder as the Lilliwites continue their winning form at John Smith Stadium

Tom Barkhuizen was in action as Preston North End beat Huddersfield Town 2-1 in Saturday’s championship game.

The 27-year-old made his fifth appearance this season in the second half for Alex Neil’s men at John Smith Stadium.

South Africa’s contribution helped the Lilliwites to their second consecutive victory since Wednesday’s win over Queen’s Park Rangers.

Preston North End got off to a great start, allowing Huddersfield to open the scoring with just eight minutes left by Fraser Campbell.

Before the half-time break, Lilliwite made several attempts to level the playing field but Carlos Corburn’s men managed to maintain their lead.

Three minutes after the resumption, Preston North End equalized when Alan Bryan put the back of the net with a personal effort.

The Republic of Ireland international then completed his brace with a fine strike two minutes later which was enough for the Lilliwits to secure all three points of the game.

Shortly before the end of the match, Huddersfield were reduced to 10 men after Nabi Sarr was shown a red card for a serious misconduct.

Berkhuizen featured for 18 minutes, hitting six off the ball and a 50% pass rate helped his side continue their winning streak.

The victory took Preston North End to 12th place in the championship table with 10 points from seven matches.

Barkhuizen has been with the Lilliwits since 2017 when he joined Blackpool and has made over 140 appearances for the club.

The 27-year-old, who has played 249 minutes in the current campaign, will be hoping for more prominence in his squad to boost his chances of joining the South African national team.
