The men’s meeting in their 50s is set to begin Saturday night in Los Angeles. Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. will join them once again as they participate in the main PPV card event from the Staples Center. Although the fight is considered an exhibition by the State Commission, promoters of Tyson, Jones and Batt have stated that the two are running with the intention of fighting.
Although the commission has the final say on things – and the performance has been described as “hard to ignite” – many unknown matches are going to be played. Tyson vs. Jones prophecy
Brian Campbell: Tyson will probably have a punch-punch power until his death, which makes the “Iron Mike” a very dangerous challenge for anyone in the early stages. But Jones, who should be enjoying a decent speed gain, is the latest fighter of the two to remain professionally active through 2018 after closing his career at 12-1. Jones has also been working on a cruiserweight in recent years, which means Tyson won’t be as concerned about size loss against an already smaller heavyweight. As long as Jones escapes the storm quickly, expect to pick Tyson with relative ease at the start of combat roles.
Brent Brookhaha House: Predicting war in this way is a practice of guessing. What does 54-year-old Tyson have at this point? Jones is inspired to be “fresh” from his career, but his chin has long been able to take clean power shots from hard punches, and Tyson is still a power punch if nothing else. But no one seems to fully understand the rules of war. The commission says it is spreading hard and will stop anything beyond that, but promoters and fighters say it is 100% a “real fight”. If they can’t really try to hurt each other, as the commission has said, it will be a fairly easy fight for Jones as he can use his speed and pull out easy pockets and combinations. And his speed will continue the fight. If he lets his punches fly at full speed and Jones plays around on the ropes as he tends to do, Tyson might clean it up and finish it. There are many unknown ways to make any kind of meaningful prediction, but this edge seems to go away on Saturday.
